How to add a custom emoji to your Discord server
- Open your server and go to Server Settings โ Emoji.
- Click Upload Emoji and pick an image under 256KB (128ร128px is ideal).
- Give it a name โ members then type
:name:to use it. - Note: using a server's custom emoji in other servers or DMs needs Discord Nitro. Standard Unicode emojis (above) need no Nitro.

How do I add custom emojis to my Discord server?
Open Server Settings, go to the Emoji tab, and upload an image under 256KB. Give it a name, and members can then use it by typing :name: in messages. You need the Manage Emojis permission.
Do I need Nitro to use Discord emojis?
No for standard Unicode emojis โ they work for everyone. Discord Nitro is only needed to use a server's custom image emojis in other servers or in direct messages.
What is a Discord emoji shortcode?
A shortcode is the text name of an emoji typed between colons, like :smile: for ๐ or :fire: for ๐ฅ. Typing it and pressing enter inserts the emoji.
Can I put emojis in a Discord channel name?
Yes. Paste a Unicode emoji directly into the channel name field. Custom server emojis can also be used, and they render in the channel list.
